The term “fixative” covers materials that work in different ways: some have low volatility and remain on the substrate for a long time, some reinforce the base, while others help connect and support different parts of the formula.

How to choose a perfume fixative

Musks, amber materials, resinoids, woods and certain highly substantive molecules can play different roles. The right choice depends on the fragrance: a transparent floral requires different support from an amber, gourmand or powerful woody composition.

For this reason, it is useful to evaluate not only how long an individual raw material lasts, but also its effect on volume, diffusion and the overall balance of the composition.
