Top notes often define the first impact of a composition, but the olfactory pyramid is a descriptive and practical model, not a rigid chemical classification. The same material can be perceived across several phases depending on volatility, dosage, formula structure and interactions with other ingredients.

How to choose top-note materials

When building an opening, you can work with brightness, freshness, contrast and diffusion. Natural citrus materials can provide immediacy and complexity; aldehydes, green, aromatic and ozonic materials can modify the volume and character of the opening. Highly diffusive materials can also support the initial impression for longer.
