Fixatives in perfumery: what they really are and how to choose them

In perfumery, the word “fixative” is often used as if it described a precise category of ingredients that automatically make a perfume last longer. In reality, the concept is more complex: there is no single mechanism of fixation, and there is no raw material that will improve the longevity of every formula without also affecting its olfactory balance.

A material may be described as a fixative because it is low in volatility and highly substantive, because it builds a stable base, because it connects different parts of a formula, or because it helps make evaporation more gradual. These functions can overlap, but they are not the same thing.

This is why it is more useful to think in terms of function in the formula, as in our guide to aroma chemicals, rather than searching for one universal ingredient “to make the perfume last.”

Longevity, substantivity and fixation are not perfect synonyms

Longevity describes how long a material or composition remains perceptible. Substantivity refers to a raw material's ability to remain on a substrate and still be present many hours later. Fixation, in formulation language, concerns the role a material plays in supporting the structure and evolution of the composition.

A raw material can be extremely persistent and still be the wrong fixative for a particular formula. If its olfactory character is strong, it may change the perfume more than it supports it. A powerful woody amber, a balsamic resin or a highly substantive vanilla material can increase the presence of the drydown while simultaneously shifting the olfactory color of the whole composition.

Lasting a long time is therefore not enough to define the value of a fixative. What matters is what happens to the entire formula.

Diffusion and longevity are different parameters

A perfume can be very long-lasting while remaining close to the skin. Conversely, it can have strong diffusion in the first few hours and then decrease quickly. Individual raw materials can also combine these parameters in different ways.

This matters because the objective should not simply be “more longevity.” A formula may need more continuity, a clearer drydown, more volume or a smoother transition from heart to base. In other cases, the real problem is diffusion, which requires different materials and strategies. Four different ways a material can contribute to fixation

These categories are functional rather than rigid. The same material can perform several roles at once.

Musks: longevity, continuity and texture

Musks are among the materials most often used to build continuity and substantivity. But speaking simply of “a musk” is too general: different materials can create clean, metallic, soft, skin-like, warm or naturalistic effects.

AMBRETTOLIDE, for example, can create a soft, sensual texture as well as a strong presence in the base. HABANOLIDE® is cleaner, more diffusive and contemporary. ETHYLENE BRASSYLATE can be particularly useful for blending and rounding. MUSCONE LAEVO brings a warmer, more animalic musk nuance.

The point is not to choose “the musk that lasts longest,” but the one whose texture belongs in the perfume. In a transparent floral, an overly warm musk can make the structure heavier; in a skin-scent accord, the same quality may be exactly what is needed.

Woody ambers and amber materials: substantivity, volume and structure

Many woody-amber materials combine high substantivity with volume and diffusion. AMBROX® SUPER can support the base with a dry, mineral amber signature; SYLVAMBER™ gives a more pronounced cedar-amber structure; ISO E SUPER® TOCO can work more transparently on continuity, volume and woody texture.

These materials can be extremely useful, but they are not “neutral fixatives.” In a delicate floral, green or citrus perfume, a woody amber that is too pronounced can change the identity of the formula. Their value comes from matching the structural role to the intended olfactory language.

Resinoids and natural base materials: fixation also changes olfactory color

Resins and deep natural materials have traditionally been used to construct persistent bases. LABDANUM RESINOIDE brings a warm, resinous amber character; BENZOINO RESINOIDE SUMATRA adds balsamic, vanillic softness; VETIVER HAITI can support the drydown with a dry, earthy and woody signature.

These materials can contribute strongly to longevity, but they do so with an obvious olfactory signature. They should therefore not be added only “for fixation”: they need to belong to the language of the perfume.

A luminous floral can lose transparency with too much labdanum; a gourmand may benefit from the roundness of benzoin; a chypre or woody perfume can use vetiver and mossy materials as integral parts of its architecture.

Salicylates and linking materials

Some materials are especially useful not because they dominate the drydown, but because they help connect the different parts of the formula. BENZYL SALICYLATE is a classic example of a substantive floral-balsamic material that can support and blend floral, solar and amber accords. CIS-3-HEXENYL SALICYLATE combines a green-floral character with good persistence and can create continuity between fresher aspects and the base.

Here, the fixation role is often more interesting as blending and continuity than as simple drydown weight.

Is every very persistent material a fixative?

No. This is one of the most common oversimplifications. A raw material may be highly substantive while its primary function is olfactory: spicy, gourmand, green, animalic, floral or woody. If it is added only because it lasts a long time, it can create a persistent but unbalanced base.

When choosing among fixatives for perfumery, it is more useful to ask:

  • Which part of the formula loses presence too early?
  • Is the problem really longevity, or is it a lack of volume and diffusion?
  • Does the perfume need a firmer base, a smoother transition or a more coherent texture?
  • How much olfactory character can I add without changing the identity of the perfume?
  • Does the chosen material support the accord, or merely cover it?

Are DPG and TEC fixatives?

DPG and TEC are first and foremost technical solvents and co-solvents. Their low volatility can modify the evaporation curve and make the opening slower, but this does not make them universal fixatives.

At high levels they can also reduce lift, brightness and transparency. They should therefore be chosen for a concrete technical function, not automatically added to increase longevity. This distinction is explored in our guide DPG or TEC: which solvent should you choose in perfumery?.

How to choose a fixative according to the perfume style

Transparent floral. It is usually better to add support without introducing a base that is too dark. Clean musks, salicylates and transparent woods may be more coherent than a heavy resin.

Woody amber. Materials such as Ambrox, woody ambers, musks and substantive woods can reinforce the drydown while staying within the language of the composition.

Chypre, amber or resinous. Labdanum, benzoin, musks, vetiver and mossy materials can become part of the olfactory identity while also adding depth and persistence.

Skin scent or musky perfume. The choice of musk becomes central: not only for longevity, but also for distance from the skin, softness and texture.

Gourmand. Balsamic, vanillic and musky materials can support the base, but a highly persistent sweet raw material can easily become the protagonist. Dosage must therefore be judged primarily by balance.

The most useful test: control versus candidate

To evaluate a fixative properly, it is better to test it in the same formula, not only as an isolated raw material on a blotter.

  1. Prepare the control. Keep a version of the formula without the new material.
  2. Prepare sample B. Add the candidate at a cautious level and rebalance the total formula.
  3. Evaluate at intervals. Compare after 15 minutes, 2 hours, 8 hours and 24 hours, and longer if the structure requires it.
  4. Do not measure only longevity. Observe the opening, readability of the heart, volume, diffusion, texture and identity of the drydown.
  5. Repeat with a dosage ladder. A larger amount does not necessarily produce a better result.

The candidate is useful when it makes the composition more coherent over time without destroying what worked in the earlier stages.

Why too much fixative can make a perfume worse

Increasing the proportion of highly substantive materials can lengthen the drydown, but it can also compress the perceptual pyramid. Top notes may feel less bright, the heart less readable and the perfume more static.

This is one reason why longevity should not be optimized in isolation. A good perfume is not only what remains after 24 hours: it is also how it evolves during those hours.

IFRA: a maximum limit is not a recommended dosage

When a raw material has an IFRA limit for a finished-product category, that value indicates a compliance requirement, not the amount that should be used as a fixative.

A material may be technically permitted at a relatively high level and be olfactorily effective at only a fraction of that value. Conversely, the level desired creatively may have to be reduced in order to comply with an applicable restriction.

Formulation dosage and an IFRA limit therefore answer two different questions.

Conclusion

A fixative is not a magic ingredient, and it is not simply “a raw material that lasts a long time.” In professional formulation, fixation comes from the interaction between substantivity, base structure, continuity, texture and the balance of evaporation.

Musks, woody ambers, resinoids, woods, salicylates and other materials can perform this role in different ways. The best choice depends on the identity of the perfume and the concrete problem that needs to be solved.

Before asking which fixative to add, ask what you want to preserve, support or make more coherent during the evolution of the formula.
