Essential oils are part of the professional perfumer’s palette, but they are not the whole palette. Other natural extracts, resinoids, aroma chemicals and compounded bases are also used. The word BASE identifies a composition that reconstructs or interprets an olfactory profile, not an essential oil extracted from the plant.
Finding your way around the materials
The natural materials in this collection include essential oils of bergamot, sweet orange, yellow mandarin, vetiver, lavandin and petitgrain; benzoin, labdanum, olibanum and myrrh resinoids; and the NatPro Tec citrus materials from Capua 1880. Commercial dilutions, where applicable, are indicated in the product name or description.
The bases allow you to explore cedarwood, sandalwood, oud, patchouli, vetiver, frangipani, jasmine, magnolia, neroli, osmanthus, rose, linden blossom, ylang-ylang, bergamot, cherry and vanilla. Some notes are represented by several interpretations: these are alternatives to compare, not materials that must all be purchased together.
The individual aroma chemicals are included for further exploration, not as botanical extracts or complete reconstructions: AMBRETTOLIDE for musky, ambrette-like facets; BACDANOL for sandalwood; LINALOOL for its floral-woody character; COUMARIN for tonka and hay; TERPINEOL PG for the floral-aromatic facets of lilac; ALDEHYDE C14 for peach; and VANILLIN for the vanilla note.
Some important distinctions for study: LAVANDIN GROSSO is lavandin, not true lavender. PETITGRAIN PARAGUAY comes from the leaves and twigs of the bitter orange tree, not the fruit peel. NEROLI BASE is neither neroli essential oil nor orange blossom absolute. LIQUORE ALLA CILIEGIA BASE interprets the fruit with a cherry liqueur character, not cherry blossom; ALDEHYDE C14 evokes peach fruit, not peach blossom.
