Pale yellow, oily liquid. Color and viscosity increase during storage (polymerization and oxidation).
Insoluble in water, soluble in alcohol and oils, sparingly soluble in propylene glycol.
A very strong, oily, green, vegetal odor reminiscent of melon rind. When heavily diluted, it becomes sweeter, more melon-like, and refreshing. This aldehyde has some use in perfume compositions, partly as a modifier of common aliphatic aldehydes, imparting a fresh, clean scent to outdoor environments, and partly as a masking agent for various purposes. It is a common ingredient in hand lotion flavorings, known as "Cucumber Lotion."
It is also used in small quantities in various food flavorings based on fruits, vegetables, etc. The concentration in the finished product usually ranges from 1 to 20 parts per million.
It is used in all types of perfumes to create marine notes, juicy fruits, especially melon and cucumber, citrus and woody notes.
It can form diethyl esters in alcoholic perfumes without altering the scent.
Form Schiff bases.
Melon aroma is present in "Carnal Flower" by Frederic Malle at a concentration of 0.02%, in "Opus XIV Royal Tobacco" by Amouage at 0.09%, in "Paco Rabanne Phantom" at 0.02%, in "J'Adore" by Dior at 0.03% and in a considerable amount (0.25%) in "Be Delicious Fresh Blossom" by DKNY and in a concentration of 0.15% in "Coach Blue".
This is a potent material, best used in concentrations of less than 1%. Small traces will add fresh, green notes to almost any fragrance, while a higher concentration will lend an exotic, fruity tone to your composition.
Melonal offers a powerful and unique note. It's effective in all types of fragrances and is valuable for creating natural sea and fruity melon notes.
Fruity melon products play a crucial role in the evolution of modern perfumery. Melonal should be treated with caution, as its impact is very intense.
Also try this material in a 1:100 ratio with isobutylthiazole (i.e., 1 part 0.1% isobutylthiazole solution to 1 part 10% Melonal solution) to achieve a great illusion of the smell of ripe cantaloupe melon. For added credibility, add a little cis-6-nonenol and, if necessary, a little canthoxal or citrolate.
