DPG – DIPROPYLENE GLYCOL

DIPROPYLENE GLYCOL, or DPG, is one of the technical solvents most widely used in a perfumer’s laboratory. It has low volatility, is almost odorless and is slightly viscous; it is chosen mainly for preparing working dilutions and making the dosing of very powerful, crystalline or concentrated raw materials more precise.

How it works in formula

DPG facilitates the preparation of 10%, 1% or other working solutions and makes it possible to evaluate with greater control materials that are too intense when neat or difficult to weigh in very small quantities.

Compared with ethanol, it evaporates much more slowly. For this reason it can make the opening softer and less immediate; at high levels, however, it can reduce brightness and slow the diffusion of the composition.

DPG or TEC?

DPG is often the most practical choice for everyday laboratory work, especially for technical dilutions and raw-material study. TEC is generally preferred when a less glycol-like, low-odor and low-volatility carrier is needed for concentrates, roll-ons and non-aqueous systems.

DPG and water

DPG is miscible with water, but this does not mean that it automatically makes essential oils, absolutes, resins or perfume bases water-soluble. Compatibility must be verified in aqueous systems and, when necessary, a specific solubilizer should be used.

When to choose it

It is particularly suitable when precise working solutions, stable dilutions and a versatile technical solvent are needed for powerful, crystalline, viscous or otherwise difficult-to-dose materials.

The value refers to the maximum concentration in the finished product, not to the percentage of the raw material in the fragrance concentrate.
