ALDEHYDE C18 / GAMMA NONALACTONE
ALDEHYDE C18 is a historical perfumery name: chemically it is not an aldehyde, but GAMMA NONALACTONE, a powerful and very persistent lactone. Its olfactory territory lies between coconut, warm milk, peach and creamy flowers.
Olfactory profile
Lactonic, creamy, coconut-like, fruity and slightly floral-musky, with a soft sweetness and a warm-milk sensation. At strong dilution the fruity facets become clearer, while at higher concentration the coconut-creamy side dominates.
In formula
GAMMA NONALACTONE is particularly effective in gardenia, tuberose, honeysuckle, plumeria and jasmine, where it increases creamy volume and floral sensuality. In fruity accords it can add body and persistence; in sandalwood and oriental structures it creates a milkier, more enveloping base.
It is a material that must be dosed carefully: its sweetness and persistence can easily dominate a formula. In small amounts, however, it can make a floral or woody accord much fuller without clearly revealing coconut.
C18 or C14?
GAMMA UNDECALACTONE / C14 is more peach-apricot and velvety; GAMMA NONALACTONE / C18 is more coconut, milk and cream. Together they form a classic pair for building gardenia, tuberose and other creamy flowers with greater depth.
When to choose it
It is particularly suitable for coconut, gardenia, tuberose, plumeria, jasmine, sandalwood and oriental accords when a lactonic, creamy and very persistent texture is desired.
