Why the same perfumery raw material can have different prices: manufacturer, commercial grade and origin
Two perfumery raw materials can have the same name, belong to the same olfactory territory or even carry the same CAS number and still have very different prices. This does not automatically mean that one is “good” and the other “bad”, nor that the more expensive product is always the better choice.
In professional perfumery, price reflects a combination of factors: manufacturer, commercial grade, technical specifications, production process, origin, availability, production scale, quality control and the form in which the material is commercialised.
So, to compare two raw materials correctly, reading the name on the bottle is not enough.
The same name does not necessarily identify the same product
Generic names such as vanillin, coumarin, benzyl salicylate or linalyl acetate identify a substance or a family of commercial grades, but products from different manufacturers can be made to different specifications.
The chemical name mainly answers the question “what substance is this?”. To answer “which commercial product is this?”, other information matters: manufacturer, trade name, specification, declared purity, possible isomeric profile, carrier and documentation.

The manufacturer matters
A manufacturer does not sell only an abstract molecule. It defines a commercial grade: specifications, tolerances, production and purification process, analytical controls, acceptance criteria and consistency between batches.
Two companies can therefore commercialise materials with the same chemical identity but with sensory or technical characteristics that are not perfectly interchangeable. In a formula, apparently small differences may become noticeable when a material is used at a significant level or occupies a central structural role.
For this reason, when a formula must be reproduced precisely, the manufacturer and commercial grade can matter as much as the chemical name.
The same CAS does not mean the same olfactory experience
A CAS number is a chemical identification tool, not an olfactory classification. By itself, it does not describe the complete sensory profile of a commercial product.
Purity, isomer ratio, secondary components, stabilisation and production process can all contribute to perceptible differences between grades that share the same CAS number.
A useful example is the comparison between HEDIONE® and HEDIONE® HC: they occupy the same chemical and olfactory territory, but the HC grade is designed with a different isomeric profile and has a different olfactory strength. Higher purity does not automatically mean a “better” smell
Purity is an important specification, but it is not a universal ranking of olfactory quality.
In some cases, higher purity is technically desirable. In others, small differences in secondary composition or isomeric profile contribute to the sensory character of a particular commercial grade.
For the perfumer, the useful question is not simply “which number is higher?”, but “which grade gives the olfactory and technical behaviour needed in this formula?”.
The production process can affect the price of synthetics
For a synthetic raw material, cost depends on more than the final chemical formula. Factors can include the number and complexity of synthesis steps, starting materials, process yield, isomer separation, purification, energy use, impurity control and industrial scale.
A product manufactured in high volume through a mature process can have very different economics from a specialty produced in smaller quantities or to a tighter specification.
A manufacturer's ability to maintain the same specification from batch to batch also has industrial value: reproducibility is especially important when a formula must be produced continuously.
For naturals, origin and harvest change the equation
Natural raw materials are complex mixtures, and their economics also depend on the available plant material.
Relevant factors can include:
- botanical species and part of the plant used;
- geographical origin;
- climate and harvest conditions;
- yield of the plant material;
- extraction or distillation method;
- selection and standardisation of the grade;
- volumes available on the market.
An essential oil, absolute, extract or resinoid cannot be compared only by the name of the plant. Even materials from the same botanical species can differ significantly because of origin, process and specification.

A base is not evaluated like a single molecule
For a base or specialty, price can reflect a completely different reality from that of a single substance.
A base is a composition designed by the manufacturer, often made from several components and possessing its own olfactory, technical and commercial identity. Its value cannot be inferred by looking for one CAS number or comparing its price with that of an isolated molecule.

Commercial concentration also changes the comparison
Two 10 ml products are not necessarily comparable if one is a concentrated grade and the other is a manufacturer-supplied solution or specialty with a carrier.
The percentage shown in a trade name describes the product in the form in which it is supplied. Before comparing prices, it is therefore necessary to understand what that commercial grade actually represents and in which form it is sold.

Quality control and documentation have a cost
A professional raw material is more than the contents of a bottle. Its commercial supply may include technical specifications, batch controls, an SDS, IFRA documentation where relevant, allergen declarations and other regulatory or quality documents.
The level and type of documentation available vary by material and manufacturer. For a professional user, however, traceability and the ability to identify the grade correctly are part of the product's value.

Production scale and availability influence cost
An ingredient produced in very large volumes and used across multiple industries has a different economic structure from a specialist perfumery raw material made in limited quantities.
Availability can also change over time. Production capacity, availability of starting materials, harvests, industrial demand, transport and market conditions can all influence sourcing costs.
For this reason, the price of a raw material is not necessarily fixed forever, even when the product name remains unchanged.
Format matters: 5 ml and 25 kg belong to different economies
The per-gram or per-millilitre price of a small format cannot be compared directly with the industrial price of a drum or bag.
In small formats, packaging, labelling, handling, order preparation, storage and logistics represent a larger share of the cost. A small format serves a different need: it allows a perfumer to study, test or formulate without purchasing industrial quantities.
The meaningful comparison is therefore between truly equivalent products, grades and formats.
More expensive does not automatically mean more suitable
A higher price can result from a tighter specification, a more expensive process, smaller production volume, the origin of a natural material or simply different market conditions.
None of these factors guarantees that the grade is the best choice for every formula.
A less expensive grade may be perfectly suitable for one project. A more expensive grade may have a sensory character or specification that makes it essential in another. Professional selection depends on the result sought, the reproducibility required and the production context.
What to compare before comparing price
When two products appear to be “the same raw material”, it is useful to check at least:

Price is commercial information, not an olfactory description
Price can tell us something about production complexity, availability or market structure, but it does not replace evaluation of the material.
Two products with very different prices can both be professional materials with different applications. Likewise, two products with similar prices are not necessarily equivalent.
For the perfumer, knowing exactly which grade is being used is more useful than building an abstract hierarchy based only on cost.
Conclusion
The “same raw material” can have different prices because, very often, the products are not actually the same commercial product in the full technical sense.
Manufacturer, specification, purity, isomeric profile, process, origin, commercial concentration, availability, format and documentation can change price and, in some cases, olfactory or technical behaviour as well.
The most accurate way to compare two materials is therefore to start with the exact identity of the commercial grade. Only then does a price comparison become meaningful.
