ISO E SUPER®, TIMBERSILK™ and SYLVAMBER™: differences and use in perfumery

ISO E SUPER®, TIMBERSILK™ and SYLVAMBER™ are often encountered in the same olfactory territory: modern woods, amber, cedar, volume and structure. This naturally raises a common question: if they are so close, why do all three exist, and when should you choose one rather than another?

The answer becomes clearer when you stop classifying a raw material only by its smell and start looking at what it does to the formula. This is the same function-first approach described in our guide Aroma chemicals: what they are and how to use them in perfumery.

The three materials share a woody-amber area and also have partly overlapping technical data, but they should not be treated as automatically equivalent commercial qualities. In a formula they can create perceptible differences in texture, fullness, cedar character, warmth, integration and tenacity.

ISO E SUPER®: transparency, volume and continuity

ISO E SUPER® TOCO IFF is probably the best-known reference of the three. Its profile is woody-amber, soft and transparent, with a velvety impression that can suggest polished wood, transparent cedar, delicate amber and clean skin.

Its usefulness, however, is not based only on its smell. In many formulas it works as a material of texture and volume: it fills out a composition without making it heavy, smooths transitions between raw materials and can make the structure feel more continuous.

It is particularly useful with transparent florals, musks, citrus notes, modern woods, amber accords and skin-scent compositions, where a harder wood could close down the formula.

IFF indicates a typical use level of up to 10% for ISO E SUPER®. This is a formulation reference from the manufacturer and is not an IFRA limit.

When to start with ISO E SUPER®

Use it as a first reference when the problem in the formula is: “it lacks body,” “the ingredients feel disconnected,” “the drydown is too empty,” or “I want a modern woody structure without a dominant wood note.”

TIMBERSILK™: more fullness and warmth, with a still-soft texture

TIMBERSILK™ IFF occupies a very similar space, but tends to create a fuller, warmer and more enveloping impression. IFF describes it as smooth, warm, woody and amber, powerful yet “silky soft.”

In a formula it can become an important part of the woody-amber foundation. It is useful when ISO E SUPER® gives transparency and continuity, but the composition needs more mass, presence and fullness in the woody area without moving directly to extremely aggressive materials.

It works well in woody and amber structures, but also with florals, spices and chypre accords. It can make a modern cedar accord feel fuller and create a smooth transition toward musks and amber materials.

IFF also indicates a typical use level of up to 10% for TIMBERSILK™, again not to be confused with an IFRA limit.

Are ISO E SUPER® and TIMBERSILK™ the same thing?

No. It is not useful to regard them simply as two interchangeable names. Their product data list overlapping CAS ranges and very similar physicochemical data, but in perfumery they are purchased and evaluated as distinct commercial qualities. The correct way to decide whether one can replace the other in a specific formula is to test both in the same base and compare the result.

SYLVAMBER™: a more defined cedar-amber profile and high tenacity

SYLVAMBER™ 937875 dsm-firmenich moves the comparison toward a more clearly cedar-amber impression. The manufacturer describes it as an intense, warm woody note with cedarwood and ambery character and particularly high tenacity.

It works mainly in the drydown: adding structure, continuity and persistence, and it can act as a bridge between more transparent woods and more forceful woody ambers.

Compared with ISO E SUPER®, SYLVAMBER™ can be interesting when you are looking not only for volume but for a more recognizable and tenacious cedar-amber foundation. Compared with TIMBERSILK™, it can feel more focused on cedar structure in the drydown rather than soft, silky fullness.

Why the CAS number is not enough to choose a raw material

This comparison illustrates an important principle. ISO E SUPER® and TIMBERSILK™ list the same CAS ranges in their catalogue data, while SYLVAMBER™ lists CAS 54464-57-2, which overlaps with that area.

A CAS number is essential for identifying a substance or a defined group of substances, but it does not replace evaluation of the commercial quality. Trade name, manufacturer, specifications, sensory profile and behavior in the formula remain essential information for the perfumer.

This is why two materials with apparently very similar chemical data should not automatically be dosed, substituted or described as if they were identical.

Can I replace ISO E SUPER® with TIMBERSILK™ or SYLVAMBER™?

There is no universal 1:1 substitution ratio. The answer depends on the function the material performs in the original formula.

  • Replacing ISO E SUPER® with TIMBERSILK™ may make the structure fuller, warmer and more present.
  • Replacing ISO E SUPER® with SYLVAMBER™ may make the drydown more cedar-amber, structured and tenacious.
  • If ISO E SUPER® was used mainly for transparency and connection, a replacement based only on weight can alter the overall balance more than expected.

The useful question is therefore not “which one is equivalent?” but “which function do I want to preserve or change?

The most useful test: an A/B/C comparison in the same formula

To understand the differences properly, reduce the other variables as much as possible.

  1. Choose a simple base. It can be a small woody, musky or floral-woody accord that you already know well.
  2. Prepare three versions. Use ISO E SUPER® in the first, TIMBERSILK™ in the second and SYLVAMBER™ in the third. For the first comparison, you can start with the same controlled level or comparable working solutions, while remembering that this does not mean the final optimum dosage will be the same.
  3. Evaluate at several intervals. Smell after about 15 minutes, 2 hours, 24 hours and, when useful, 48 hours.
  4. Compare specific parameters. Volume, transparency, warmth, cedar impression, softness, integration with the rest of the formula and tenacity.
  5. Only then change the dosage. A dosage ladder helps you understand whether a difference comes from the character of the material or simply from the amount used.

This method is much more informative than smelling three separate blotters and deciding which one “smells better.”

Which one should you choose in practice?

ISO E SUPER® is often the natural choice when you want transparency, soft volume, continuity and a contemporary wood effect that does not dominate.

TIMBERSILK™ is useful when you want to retain a soft texture while increasing fullness, warmth and presence in the woody-amber structure.

SYLVAMBER™ becomes especially useful when you want a more defined, structural and tenacious cedar-amber drydown.

In a real formula, the answer does not necessarily have to be choosing only one material. Materials from the same area can be used for different functions: one for volume and continuity, another to give the drydown a more defined direction. The proportion, however, should be developed experimentally rather than applied as a universal recipe.

What if you need much more impact?

ISO E SUPER®, TIMBERSILK™ and SYLVAMBER™ do not cover the entire world of modern amber woods. If the goal is a much more forceful effect, there are woody ambers and boosters that work effectively at much lower dosages and with much higher projection.
