How to build a perfume accord: a practical method for beginners

An accord is a fundamental structure in perfumery: a combination of raw materials that together creates a coherent olfactory effect or performs a recognisable function within a composition. Understanding what an accord is helps you read a formula not as a simple list of ingredients, but as a system of relationships.

What is an accord in perfumery?

An accord can be figurative — for example rose, leather, tea or marine — or abstract and structural: a woody-musky drydown, a transparent floral body, an amber area, a clean texture or a bridge between two parts of a formula.

An accord is not necessarily the same thing as a complete perfume. It can be an internal module within a composition, with its own identity and a specific function.

Why are accords important?

A complete perfume has to manage opening, development, drydown, diffusion, longevity, contrast, signature and coherence at the same time. An accord makes it possible to isolate part of the problem and observe the relationships between materials more clearly.

This is one reason accords play such an important role in professional training: they make visible phenomena that can be difficult to attribute to one ingredient or one relationship inside a very complex formula.

Raw materials do not have only one role

Within an accord, functions such as main direction, support, bridging, texture, contrast or character modification can be recognised. But these functions are not fixed labels.

The same material can create volume in one formula, act as a bridge in another, or become dominant when the context changes. Knowing a raw material therefore means understanding not only what it smells like, but also how it changes what surrounds it.

Proportions change the identity of an accord

Two accords can contain exactly the same materials and still smell very different when their proportions change. An ingredient that remains in the background at one level may become a signature, a contrast or a dominant element at another.

There are no universal ratios that guarantee a good accord. Proportions depend on the olfactory strength of the materials, their diffusion, substantivity, the concentration of the solutions used and, above all, the intended effect.

Professional formulas therefore have to be read together with the actual concentrations of the materials. A working solution is not equivalent to the same amount of neat material, and the solvent itself can influence the behaviour of the mixture. What does a perfumer observe in an accord?

Evaluation goes beyond “I like it / I don't like it”. An accord can be read through several different dimensions:

  • hierarchy — is it clear what leads and what supports?
  • texture — does it feel dry, soft, transparent, creamy, dense or metallic?
  • contrast — are the parts distinct without feeling disconnected?
  • diffusion — does it create space or remain compact?
  • evolution — does it remain coherent as it evaporates?
  • drydown — does what remains still represent the original idea?

These dimensions are not interchangeable. An accord can be intense but poorly diffusive, persistent but flat, or transparent and still very present in space.

When an accord seems “wrong”

Words such as too sweet, flat, dense, harsh, weak or disconnected are more useful than a simple aesthetic judgement because they point to different areas of the problem.

An accord that feels too sweet may reflect an accumulation of several soft and balsamic materials rather than one single ingredient. A flat structure may have plenty of intensity but little hierarchy. A heavy accord may result from an accumulation of slow and substantive materials. Harshness may come either from a very incisive material or from a transition that is not well integrated.

There is therefore no automatic correction associated with each symptom. Formulation diagnosis means understanding which relationship is producing the perceived effect.

“Stronger” does not mean “more diffusive” or “more persistent”

Intensity, diffusion and longevity are different properties. A material that smells very strong close to the blotter may create little volume in space; another may seem relatively transparent while expanding the composition significantly. Likewise, long persistence on a blotter does not automatically make a material a universal fixative.

An accord changes when it enters a complete formula

An accord that feels perfectly balanced on its own may behave differently when it meets floral, citrus, spicy, aquatic or woody blocks. Interactions change the relative weight of materials and can make certain facets emerge or disappear.

An accord should therefore be considered a module, not an immutable structure. Its real function can only be understood fully in the context of the composition.

Which materials can help when beginning to understand accords?

To understand relationships, it is useful to have materials with different characters and functions available.
