Ambroxan Crystal (Kao)
Ambroxan Crystal is one of the key molecules responsible for the unmistakable scent of natural ambergris. Chemically identical to Ambrofix (Givaudan) and other similar products, this material developed by Kao has a slightly more animalic nuance than the Givaudan equivalent, while maintaining the same warm, enveloping, ambery olfactory signature.
The scent profile, described by Kao simply as "a typical ambergris note," stands out for its extreme persistence, exceptional diffusion, and the ability to add volume, warmth, and sweetness to any composition—even in small quantities. It's effective even in trace amounts, but can be used up to 2% or more, ensuring a lasting effect of more than a month on a blotter.
Ambroxan occurs naturally in ambergris along with Ambrinol and is universally recognized as one of the most noble and fascinating molecules in modern perfumery. Derived from clary sage (via sclareol), it is a perfect choice for creating authentic and sophisticated amber accords.
Physical form: fine crystals, soluble in ethanol and other perfumery solvents.
Solubility: Dissolves in ethanol up to 10% (warm environment, vigorous stirring required). Above 5%, it may crystallize at low temperatures.
