Oil of Petitgrain (English), essence de petitgrain (French), Petitgrainol (German), oleum petitgrain (Latin).
Petitgrain oils are obtained from the leaves and branches of citrus trees by steam distillation.
The most valuable petitgrain oil is that obtained from the leaves of the bitter orange tree, known as petitgrain bigardia. It was used in French perfumery as early as the 18th century. It was produced in southern France.
In the 19th century, its production began in North Africa, Italy, and Spain, but demand outstripped the resources that bitter orange plantations in these countries could provide, and by the early 20th century, Paraguay had become a major producer of petitgrain oil.
In 1880, bitter orange cultivation was established in Paraguay, and it was soon crossed with local varieties of sour and semi-sweet oranges. The resulting variety, "Paraguayan petitgrain oil," was born.
The quality of petitgrain oil depends not only on the plant variety but also on the distillation technology. Since it contains up to 80% linalylacetate and linalool, distillation should not be carried out in primitive facilities with direct heat, where the leaves are immersed in boiling water, as this process causes the decomposition of linalool and its acetate. Distillation should be carried out with dry steam, and the condensate should be released immediately to avoid hydrolysis of the main component, linalylacetate.
The oil yield is about 0.2%.
Modern research on the oil shows that it is composed of approximately 400 components. Its aromatic characteristics are determined by linalyl acetate (46%), linalool (25%), geranyl and neryl acetate (7%), geraniol and nerol (3%), alpha-terpineol (6%), limonene (2-4%), and numerous other minor components, including the influence of nerolidol (0.05%) and other terpene alcohols, epoxyocimene (0.0003%), beta-damascenone (0.0002%), beta-ionone (0.0005%), and 2-isopropyl-3-methoxypyrazine (0.0001%). According to some sources, the oil also contains 0.05% indole and 0.05% N-methylanthranilic acid methyl ether (dimethylanthranilate).
Paraguayan petitgrain oil is a pale yellow liquid (boiling point 67°C) with a strong, characteristic aroma reminiscent of linalyl acetate and neroli oil. The aroma is strong, sweetly bitter, and floral.
It has no phototoxic effects.
French petitgrain oil is much more frequently falsified than that from Paraguay. Between 40 and 85% of petitgrain oil consists of acetic acid esters of linalool and geraniol. Limonene is found only when the processed material includes the fruit; leaves and branches do not yield limonene-containing oil. Some oil samples contain citral; its presence in the oil indicates that lemon leaves or branches were present in the processed material. The oil is widely used in perfumery.
Petitgrain bigardia has a strong, mellow, and pleasant aroma. When combined with the more expensive neroli, it reduces the price of expensive perfumes without compromising quality. This is exploited to counterfeit neroli.
When a more subtle scent is needed, Paraguayan petitgrain oil is used as a terpene-free petitgrain. This oil is obtained by vacuum distillation. The terpene-free oil has a very rich, smooth, and harmonious aroma. It is a major component of artificial neroli oil.

LAVANDIN GROSSO EO – aromatic, herbaceous and camphoraceous essential oil with notes of lavender, Mediterranean herbs and light pine

A fresh, herbaceous, rustic, and floral scent with hints of camphor and bergamot citrus. Every year, around 1,000 tons of oils are produced (1% dry weight yield) through steam distillation of various lavender species. The most important are lavender Lavandula angustifolia MILL. (200 tons; Fig. 7.5), spearmint Lavandula latifolia MEDIK. (200 tons), and lavandula intermedia EMERIC ex LOISEL (750 tons). Lavandula is a natural hybrid between lavender and spearmint. The main production regions of these oils are the upper part of Provence (France), Spain, Portugal, and Bulgaria.

Although more than 300 components have been identified in these oils, the most important are (-)-(R)-linalool and its acetate. Lavender oil has the highest concentration of these ingredients, up to 70%, followed by lavandin oil (32% linalool and 26% acetate), while lavender spike oil contains only 40% linalool. Lavender spike oil also contains significant amounts of camphor (14%) and 1,8-cineole (26%); components that are found in lavender oil only in trace amounts (<1%).

The monoterpene alcohol (-)-(R)-lavandulol (1%) and its acetate (3%) can be considered as biogenetic internal standards for lavender/lavandin oils, since these irregular isoprenoids are not present in lavender spicata oil. The same is true for some C8-derived aliphatic compounds, relatively common in lavender oil. Three examples of these are: oct-1-en-3-yl acetate (1.2%), octan-3-one (0.6%), and oct-1-en-3-ol (0.5%).

Monoterpene derivatives constitute the majority (>95%) of all components present in the three lavender oils. The stereochemical isomers of ocimene and (+)-(S)-terpinene-4-ol are present in quantities up to 10%. The sesquiterpene hydrocarbons (<5%) consist mainly of caryophyllene (<3%), farnesenes (<2%), and germacrene D (<1%). Therefore, over 90% of lavender oil consists of only 12 components that are present in concentrations >1%. Another 26 components (7%) are present in quantities between 0.1-1.0%, from which it can be deduced that the remaining 3% of the oil consists of approximately 250 microelements with high structural diversity and, in some cases, interesting olfactory properties.

Galbanolenes (0.02%) and (1,3E,5Z,8Z)-undec-1,3,5,8-tetraene (0.004%), which are pheromones of blue algae and influence the nature of galbanum, contribute significantly due to their low detection limits and characteristic odors. Three other monoterpenes worthy of note for their importance are the cyclic rosofuran esters, peryllene, and nerol oxide. All isomers of linalool oxide accompany (-)-(R)-linalool in lavender oil, along with its oxidation product (+)-(R)-4-methyl-4-vinylbutyrolactone (0.01%).

Lavender oil is rich in sesquiterpenoid microelements and metabolites, among which a series of sandalwood derivatives deserve particular attention, belonging to the optical series opposite to that found in sandalwood oil. The hydrocarbon (-)-alpha-santalol, found in the oil in quantities up to 0.7%, is the precursor to (+)-alpha-photosantalol A, alpha-photosantalol B, and alpha-santalal. Among the metabolites of (-)-alpha-santalol, the aldehyde ekasantal deserves mention, for its sandalwood-like scent.

The jasmine odorants cis-jasmone and methyl jasmonate, and more importantly, the violet odorants beta-ionone and beta-damascenone, strongly influence the overall olfactory perception of lavender oil. It is widely used in perfumery to support herbal scents, such as lavender, lavandin, rosemary, citrus oils, oakmoss, etc., as well as a fixative in many types of fragrances; it is almost a standard ingredient in chypre perfumes with notes of amyl salicylate and lavender, with or without oakmoss.

A classic means of masking odors such as iodophor, phenolic odors, quinoline odors, etc.

Coumarin is found in various natural sources, from grass to hay to citrus peel, and its nature is such that even synthetic coumarin provides a natural effect. It is truly a nearly universal material that adapts to all perfume constructions.

If you add a vanilla note to a fragrance, there will be a change, but you'll still recognize the scent. It serves multiple functions: it enhances, it suppresses, it adds intensity. You can really use it for anything. The combination of methylanthranilate, which represents a floral note, and coumarin, which represents a powdery or almost edible note similar to almond... creates an extremely masculine combination. It recalls Jean-Paul Gaultier's "Le Mâle" (created by perfumer Francis Kurkdjian) or many other chypres in this category, such as Joop Homme (created by perfumer Michel Almairac). Joop Homme is a bit more oriental, but has the same structure.

You have this flower along with the powder—methylanthranilate and coumarin—that creates a surprisingly masculine accent, even though you'd expect it to be one of the more feminine accents. It's really interesting. In the days of classical perfumery, when Houbigant (perfumer Paul Parquet) created Fougère Royal, coumarin was the base of lavender... You think of fragrances for women, mainly orientals. They contained large amounts of coumarin, heliotropin, and vanillin, which modulated the spicy orange blossom accords in those fragrances. But if you look at something like a Coty chypre fragrance (by François Coty), released in 1917, the coumarin, which makes up a large part of that fragrance, softens the civet absolute, another interesting classical accord. In this, it is very similar to Safrol.
Methyl salicylate is used in perfumery compositions as a secondary ingredient in many types of "exotic florals" such as tuberose, cassia, etc., as well as artificial ylang-ylang. Its scent can be enhanced by other floral notes, creating a sweet nuance in a fujere. It's logical to think that the only aromatic chemical of interest for perfumery contained in fern rhizomes is methyl salicylate, since the common fern contains no other significant volatile compounds. Amylsalicylate is more widely used because it has incredible persistence, sweetness, and freshness without the characteristic "candy" odor of the methyl ester.
Methyl salicylate is used in the tuberose notes and orange color as a modifier of the solar notes, bringing a fruity nuance.
It is a potent substance with a detection threshold of tens of parts per million.
This ester is widely used in food flavoring compositions and is often the main, if not the only, ingredient in certain types of consumer products.
It is used as a secondary component in many food flavorings, such as strawberry, grape, blackcurrant, etc., as well as in nut, vanilla, spice blends, etc. It gives fruity fragrances a distinctive "green" note.
The average concentration in most finished products is between 25 and 1000 parts per million, but in toothpastes it can exceed 8000 parts per million.
Pharmacological reports show that the lethal dose of methyl salicylate is approximately 10 grams for a child and approximately 30 grams for an adult in 24 hours. It is not uncommon for children to "eat" toothpaste, and to obtain a lethal dose of the complex ester, approximately 1200 grams, or approximately 8-10 tubes of toothpaste flavored with 0.8% methyl salicylate, would be required. To obtain the same dangerous amount, it would be necessary to drink more than 10 liters of non-alcoholic beverages or approximately 3 kg of chewing gum. Numerous cases of methyl salicylate poisoning in children are reported in the United States each year.
Despite its widespread use as a flavoring, methyl salicylate is poisonous if ingested, so special care should be taken when handling or storing this material.
If small children have access to your work area, take steps to ensure the solution is safe and ensure it is stored safely.
Vanillin is a constitutional isomer of methyl salicylate.

Perfume base: The green chalice is the ideal base for refreshing, green, and foresty fragrances.
